What is the active ingredient in Imodium and how does it work?

The active ingredient in Imodium is Loperamide. Loperamide works by slowing down your bowel and returning it to its normal rhythm. This helps to restore the absorption of fluids into your body. Imodium Comfort Tablets also contain 125mg of simeticone, an anti-foaming agent that works to relieve bloating and stomach cramps by breaking up the excess gas in the bowel.

Warnings and Precautions

Not suitable for use by children under the age of 12 or IBS patients under the age of 18.

If you have AIDS and your stomach becomes swollen, stop using this product and speak to your doctor immediately

DO NOT USE IF:

If you are breastfeeding

You are allergic to any of the ingredients this medication contains

You have severe diarrhoea after taking antibiotics

You are having a flare-up of an inflammatory bowel condition, such as ulcerative colitis

You are constipated or your stomach appears swollen (especially in children with severe dehydration)

You have acute dysentery, showing symptoms such as blood in your stools, high temperature

Speak to your GP before use if:

You are pregnant

Ingredients

Active ingredients: Loperamide hydrochloride 2 mg and simeticone (equivalent to 125 mg dimeticone) per tablet.

Other ingredients: Calcium hydrogen phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, acesulfame K, artificial vanilla flavour (includes propylene glycol, maltodextrin, ethanol and benzyl alcohol), sodium starch glycolate (type A) and stearic acid.
